Omar Sosa

This multi-faceted man, composer, pianist, and band leader, born in Cuba in 1965, began his musical journey at the age of 8 on percussion and marimba but soon found his true place on the piano. He studied at the renowned Escuela Nacional de Música and later at the Instituto de Arte in Havana, honing his art and soaking up influences which range from Chopin to Monk. Artfully mixing traditional Afro-Cuban with jazz and classical, he has taken his musical vision around the world, having performed in many of the world’s finest venues such as Carnegie Hall, London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall and the Getty Center in Los Angeles; he’s also a regular at premiere festivals such as Monterey Jazz, North Sea Jazz, Montreux, Ravenna Jazz and WOMAD. In addition, he has joined forces with some of the world’s greatest musicians such as Paolo Fresu, Trilok Gurtu, producer Greg Landau and Dave Garibaldi from Tower of Power.

“Omar Sosa is a fusion artist in the best sense of the word.
The virtuosic pianist mixes his Cuban roots with tastes of bebop, free jazz, even hip-hop and electronica, into a strikingly fresh and spicy modern stew that’s much more than the sum of its ingredients.” Joel Roberts, ALLABOUTJAZZ

Omar has made over 20 records, can boast of several Grammy nominations, received a lifetime achievement award from the Smithsonian in 2003 in recognition of his efforts to develop Latin Jazz in the US, and has even collaborated with film and television.
Always on the go, musically hungry to go deeper and deeper, Omar Sosa is one of the most inspiring artists around today!
