Niladri Kumar started to learn Sitar when he was four, inspired by his father, Sitar Maestro Kartick Kumar – the senior student of Ravi Shankar for 55 years. Niladri, who was brought up in Mumbai, gave his first performance at the age of six, at an ashram in Pondicherry. He has performed all over the world mesmerizing audiences with his solo Hindustani Classical Performances. Niladri has played an active role in the Bollywood Film Industry and has designed and made an Electric Sitar.

He has performed with many major western and Indian artists like John McLaughlin, Zakir Hussain, Herbie Hancock, Richard Bona, Jonas Hellborg, Charles Lloyd, Trilok Gurtu, Talvin Singh and many others. Although based in Mumbai and frequently performing in India, he is well known in Western Europe and America. His 2008 appearance on “Floating Point” by Mclaughlin led on to his work in duet with Mercury Award Winner Talvin Singh in 2011. They released a joint album “The Bliss” on Harmonia Mundi’s World Village label, which London’s Daily Telegraph described as “a succession of gorgeously melodic grooves”. It is for his continuing association with Zakir Hussain’s “The Masters of Percussion” that he is best known outside India. Niladri performs coast to coast US tours with them, including New York’s Madison Square Gardens and Washington’s Kennedy Centre; as The Huffington Post recently put it “But Hussain and Kumar’s performance is likely to be the highlight. Kumar is considered one of his generation’s most talented classical sitarists.” In Europe that group is present at all major jazz music Festivals like Montreux, North Sea Jazz, London Jazz festival.


Bollywood Soundtrack Performer
Niladri is not just a world class concert performer –  he also joins the glitterati of Indian musicians –  Ravi and Anoushka Shankar, Zakir Hussain, Asha Bhosle, Hari Prasad and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan by being a frequent performer in Bollywoood films; Musical directors like, A.R. Rahman, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and Pritam have chosen him for Soundtracks of many notable films.

The prestigious Indian Government’s Sangeet Natak Akademi in 2007, The Sanskriti Award, Jadubhatta Puraskar, the MTV Immies for the Best Classical/Fusion Instrumental Album for “If” and the prestigious GIMA Award for best Classical instrumental album in 2011.



Instrument Designer
Niladri is also known as the creator of an electric 5-string sitar, which he plays commonly at his Indian Fusion and crossover projects, utilizing this instrument and distortions and loops in his performances. He calls this electric sitar a ‘zitar’ .
