BIOGRAPHY
Poet, singer and composer Beatriz Azevedo is a Brazilian multi-artist. She won the Bolse Virtuose grant from the Ministry of Culture of Brazil in 2002. In 2003 she presented her concert at Verizon Music Festival and at the Museum of Modern Art’s (MoMA) “Brazil Premiere!” in New York.
“Bum Bum do Poeta”, the debut cd by Beatriz Azevedo, was released in Brazil on Caetano Veloso’s label Natasha Records and Nippon Crown Records in Japan. “Mapa-Mundi (samba and poetry)” is her latest release, produced by Alê Siqueira, whose production credits also include Tom Zé, Elza Soares, Carlinhos Brown and Marisa Monte recent albums.
Beatriz Azevedo’s music features on the compilation “Brazil”: The Essential Album” alongside Tom Jobim, Chico Buarque, Elis Regina, João Gilberto and other Brazilian masters, released by the UK label Union Square Music. They also released the cd “Bossa Nova Nights” which contains a further two tracks by Beatriz Azevedo.
TV Cultura produced a one hour special based on her show “Bum Bum do Poeta”, which was broadcast in December 2000. Editora Iluminuras published her poetry books Idade da Pedra (2002) and Peripatético (1996).
A graduate in the Performing Arts, Beatriz has received prizes in Theatre, Poetry and Dramaturgy. She won a scholarship from the Instituto de Cooperacion Iberoamericana in Spain, studying theatre at Sala Beckett, Barcelona. Beatriz also studied at Mannes College of Musica and the Jazz & Contemporary Music Program in New York.
Beatriz Azevedo’s band in New York includes Smokey Hormel (Tom Waits, Beck), Mauro Refosco (David Byrne), Didi Gutman (Bebel Gilberto), Marivaldo dos Santos and David Heilman (Stomp), Michael Leonhart (Grammy winner) and Bill Holcom (U-town).
She has performed at Tonic, Knitting Factory and Joe’s Pub music venues in New York. Beatriz performed as special guest at Vinicius Cantuaria’s shows and created some songs together for his album “Horse and Fish”, released in 2004 by Hannibal/Ryko in Europe, US and Japan. Recently Beatriz Azevedo appeared as special guest of Cyro Baptista in the show Beat the Donkey and recorded with the Thievery Corporation at the ESL MUSIC studio.
